Pronaos (Narthex) of the Uniate Church

The ladder goes to the balcony overlooking the naos (nave) which is traditionally occupied by young boys during the service. The pronaos is occupied by women and girls over the age of fifteen. Most wooden churches in Maramures have a single door between the pronaos and naos, but openings have been cut on either side of the door here so the women can better see and hear the service.
