Uniate Church

This is one of the most impressive wooden churches in Maramures. At one time, its height of 54 meters made it the tallest wooden structure in Europe. The new church at the convent in Barsana now claims the record at 56 meters.

The church was built in 1724 and today serves the 400 families living in Surdesti. Like most wooden churches in Maramures, it is built almost entirely from oak without metal nails. The beautiful interior is original with wall paintings from 1810.
