Wall Paintings in the Pronaos (Narthex) of the Church
The church in Poienile Izei is best known for these wall paintings made in
1783. The portion of the painting behind the ladder leading to the balcony has nearly worn
away.
The painting shows some people walking into the mouth of a fire-breathing
bird. Others are being tortured by a goat headed draci (demon) for specific
transgressions. For example, a man is being hung from a meat hook by his tongue, another
is having his back plowed, a woman is being pressed with an iron and others are tormented
for related activities performed on Sunday. Additionally, a woman is being made to eat
babies for aborting them and perhaps most curious, a man has a bellows in his behind for
farting in church! |
